What you will learn
- Explain the relationship between the array and the Field contract.
- “Is the ?? operator mandatory field validation?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
Determine the expected keys and the requirement of each field. Replacing the missing field with the default and rejecting the erroneous request are different decisions. If null value and non-existent key need to be separated, use array_key_exists. Explicitly select accepted domains rather than pushing all client domains to automatic database update.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
<?php
$lesson = ['title' => 'Diziler', 'minutes' => 12];
echo $lesson['title'] ?? 'Başlıksız';
var_export(array_key_exists('level', $lesson));Expected result and interpretation
The title is shown; The check returns false because there is no level key.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| no key | Incomplete field decision | Default or rejection required |
| key null | Evaluate separate meaning | It may not be the same as not being found |
| Extra role area | do not accept | Unauthorized domain update is prevented |
Practice task
Add the level field with null value. Observe the difference between isset and array_key_exists.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Do not turn extra fields sent by the client into an opportunity for unauthorized updates.
Test your understanding
?? operator is mandatory field validation?
Answer explained: No; selects default. The lack of a required field should also be rejected.
