What you will learn
- Explain the relationship between login and ID renewal.
- “Does HttpOnly stop all XSS effects?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
Select Secure for HTTPS, HttpOnly to limit script access, and SameSite by delivery policy. Refresh the ID after successful login. Handle server session and cookie together on exit. These measures do not replace CSRF verification or per-object authorization checking.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
<?php
session_set_cookie_params(['secure'=>true,'httponly'=>true,'samesite'=>'Lax','path'=>'/']);
session_start();
// Başarılı girişten sonra session_regenerate_id(true) çağrılır. resmî örnekte yaşam döngüsünü inceleyin.Expected result and interpretation
In the HTTPS environment, the session cookie is prepared with the specified attributes. The snippet is not the full login system.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Successful login | Refresh session ID | Reduces risk of fixation |
| Expired session | Re-verify | Old authority should not continue |
| HttpOnly var ama XSS var | Continue XSS fixing | Script can send action |
Practice task
Examine the Set-Cookie heading in network tools. Include pre- and post-login ID renewal in the testing plan.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Do not include the session ID in the URL; can infiltrate daily and shared links.
Test your understanding
Does HttpOnly kill all XSS effects?
Answer explained: No. Limits reading the cookie; The running script can still operate with the user's session.
