What you will learn
- Explain the relationship between Condition and Match.
- “What gap does default close?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
default is applied when no cases match. PHP switch uses loose comparison; Examine the result of this for type-sensitive matches. Unlike match, which came with PHP 8, it compares multiples and produces a value. Don't assume two builds have the same contract; Choose the one that matches the business rule.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
<?php
$status = 'draft';
switch ($status) {
case 'draft': echo 'Taslak'; break;
case 'published': echo 'Yayında'; break;
default: echo 'Geçersiz';
}Expected result and interpretation
The draft is written; break prevents the next branch from running.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| draft and break | single output | The fall is stopped |
| unknown situation | default behavior | Silent acceptance is prevented |
| mixed species | Examine comparison semantics | Switch matches loosely |
Practice task
Remove the first break statement and observe the result; then add it back and explain the difference in behavior.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Do not translate the status code directly into the file path or SQL fragment.
Test your understanding
