SIBERSALDIRI.COM · FOCUSED LESSON
What you will learn
- To explain the relationship between HTTP meaning and TLS channel.
- “What problem does HTTPS alone not solve?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
GET normally has data reading semantics; Don't randomly put the state changing operation into a GET connection. 401 is associated with the need for authentication, 403 is associated with access denial. TLS certificate and domain verification tests who the transfer is made to. Even with an encrypted connection, the application may return sensitive data to the wrong person.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
GET /lessons/42 HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
Accept: application/json
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: application/jsonExpected result and interpretation
The example shows the message format; The authorization check is not included in the message text itself.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | Review the authentication flow | Might be missing or invalid ID |
| 403 | Review the authorization decision | Access denied |
| HTTPS 200 | Verify object authority | Transfer trust is not enough |
Practice task
Design the expected states of sessionless, unauthorized, and authorized requests for the same resource.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Don't assume that because HTTPS is used there can't be IDOR or XSS.
Test your understanding
What problem does HTTPS alone not solve?
Answer explained: It does not solve application layer problems such as incorrect authorization and incorrect business rules.
