What you will learn
- To explain the relationship between Text and Output encoding.
- “Does HTML coding prevent database attack?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
Creates a PHP_EOL line break in the terminal; The HTML view may not show the same line break as a visual break. Using htmlspecialchars in an HTML text node prevents special characters from being marked. This process is not data validation or SQL security. Separately determine where you will store the encoded data and raw text.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
<?php
$name = '<Akademi>';
echo htmlspecialchars($name, ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE, 'UTF-8');Expected result and interpretation
<Academy> is generated in the HTML source; The browser displays the text with angle brackets.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| HTML text field | HTML coding | Special characters should not be interpreted |
| SQL value | Parameter binding | Data must be separated from the query |
| Terminal output | text contract | HTML display rule is not applied |
Practice task
Run the example in terminal and browser. Explain the difference between source view and visual output.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Do not consider SQL input safe with htmlspecialchars; Bind parameters in the query.
Test your understanding
Does HTML coding prevent database attack?
Answer explained: No. HTML and SQL are different interpreters; Each trust boundary needs its own control.
