What you will learn
- Explaining the relationship between Session ID and Object policy.
- “Does UUID alone resolve IDOR?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
The server must obtain the user identity from the authenticated session. Limit the query or policy check to the object scope. Unpredictable identities are additional defense; It is not a substitute for authorization. Listing, downloading, editing, and deleting paths must all apply the same object convention. Negative testing must be done with a synthetic object belonging to another account.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
SELECT id, title FROM documents
WHERE id = :document_id AND owner_id = :session_user
-- İki değer de parametre olarak bağlanır.Expected result and interpretation
Records belonging to another user do not enter the result set; The error response must not leak data.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Own document ID | Result with ownership condition | User context is trustworthy |
| another identity | Reject without returning data | Object-level permission is missing |
| UUID is being used | maintain control | Difficulty guessing is not permission |
Practice task
Create a read/write/delete authorization matrix with two synthetic accounts and two documents.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Do not take the owner_id field from the user ID sent by the client.
Test your understanding
Does UUID alone resolve IDOR?
Answer explained: No. Makes identity guessing difficult; does not enforce access policy.
