Linux: User, permission and service basics

Linux security requires understanding which processes access which resources with which identity, rather than memorizing commands. File ownership and service authorization should be evaluated together.

What you will learn

  • Explain the relationship between Identity and Permissions.
  • “Why can the file be readable but not accessible?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
  • Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.

How it works and where the trust boundary lies

First read the current user and group information. File permissions and parent directory access are different controls. Run a service with the minimum privilege it needs, rather than root. Logs and package updates are part of the maintenance process. Solving a permissions issue by giving everyone write permissions increases the scope of the problem.

Linux: User, permission and service basics flow: Identity → Permissions → Resource access
Identity → Permissions → Resource access. The diagram shows the relationship; It does not replace the entire application.

Worked example

The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.

id
ls -ld .
ls -l sample.txt

Expected result and interpretation

The commands show the current identity, directory and file permissions without changing them.

Compare the scenarios

StatusRecommended approachWhy?
File permission is correctCheck parent directoryA permit may be required
service rootConsider minimum authorizationIt is unnecessary domain
Error resolution 777rejectExtensive write privilege creates new risk

Practice task

In an example file, comment the permissions of the owner, group and other users separately.

  1. Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
  2. Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
  3. Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.

Common mistake and how to correct it

Don't make using chmod 777 your default habit to fix problems.

Test your understanding

Why might the file be readable but not accessible?

Answer explained: Parent directory traversal permissions or additional security mechanisms may prevent access.
