What you will learn
- Explain the relationship between transaction pattern and Structure selection.
- “Is a sequential collection unique?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
Vector may be a good start for sequential navigation and random access. Structures such as set for uniqueness and map for key matching carry different conventions. Don't make definitive performance decisions with theoretical complexity without determining the amount of data and dominant operation. Incorrect data structure can turn into a resource problem with unnecessary copying and unlimited growth.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
#include <vector>
#include <algorithm>
int main(){
std::vector<int> values{4,2,4};
std::sort(values.begin(),values.end());
}Expected result and interpretation
The collection comes in order 2,4,4; sorting does not deduplicate.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| sequential access | Evaluate Vector | Adjacent data is suitable |
| unique key | Evaluate the set | There is a non-recurrence agreement |
| value with key | Evaluate map | Pairing required |
Practice task
If you need uniqueness in the same data, write which structure you would choose and why.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Don't take Big-O as a definitive measure of speed, independent of actual data size and fixed costs.
Test your understanding
Is an ordered collection unique?
Answer explained: No. Sorting and non-repetition are different contracts.
