What you will learn
- To explain the relationship between Interface and Real object.
- “What error does override help catch?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
The virtual function provides runtime redirection; Override makes the compiler check for signature errors. Copying the base class by value may cause the derived part to be lost by slicing. Choose the use of reference, pointer, and ownership-managing types based on purpose. The abstract interface should be kept small and stable.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
struct Output { virtual ~Output()=default; virtual int size() const=0; };
struct ShortOutput : Output { int size() const override { return 3; } };
int measure(const Output& out){ return out.size(); }Expected result and interpretation
The actual size implementation is called when the ShortOutput object is passed into measure .
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Override signature is correct | dynamic application | Actual type is selected |
| Const difference is wrong | Compiler check | Override may not occur |
| Basic copy by value | risk of slicing | Derived partition disappears |
Practice task
Run the same measure function with another Output type without modification.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Don't lose behavior by copying the derived object to the base class value.
Test your understanding
What error does override help catch?
Answer explained: It catches incorrect signature or const differences that don't actually override the underlying virtual function.
