What you will learn
- Explain the relationship between Input and Parsing.
- “Is reading success business rule validation?” To give a reasoned answer to the question.
- Changing the example and comparing expected and observed behavior.
How it works and where the trust boundary lies
std::cin performs formatted reading. An error occurs when text is substituted for a number; This situation and the remaining entry need to be addressed in the reread. In the production parser, verify that the entire row is consumed and the range of the number. Also delimit user input before treating it as a command or file path.
Worked example
The following passage makes the concept visible. Evaluate samples containing commands or code in your own separate testing environment, not in the production system. Architectural diagrams and policy examples are not executable programs.
#include <iostream>
int main() {
int count{};
if (!(std::cin >> count) || count < 1 || count > 100) {
std::cerr << "1-100 arası sayı gerekli"; return 1;
}
std::cout << count * 2;
}Expected result and interpretation
24 when 12 is entered; Entering abc or 0 produces an error.
Compare the scenarios
| Status | Recommended approach | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Parse and check range | Positive is the smallest number |
| abc | reading error | Number cannot be parsed |
| 12abc | Full line control may be required | Number prefix may have been read |
Practice task
Try with 12, 0, 101 and abc. Discuss why 12abc input requires stricter line parsing.
- Write down the expected outcome and acceptance condition before the action.
- Change a single variable; Record the observation and the medium you used.
- Evaluate the result with the comparison table above. Explain which assumption might be wrong if it does not fit.
Common mistake and how to correct it
Do not use the variable as valid data after a failed read.
Test your understanding
Is read success business rule validation?
Answer explained: No. The parsed number may also be outside the accepted range.
